how it works
The Chinese translation of Gua is “to scrape” or “scratch”, while Sha means “sand” or a “red, raised rash”.
The skin is ‘stroked’ with a smooth blunt object over a lubricated area, until ‘sha’ or ‘petechiae’ (small red raised areas) appears.
There is however no injury to the skin surface as it remains intact.
is Gua Sha safe?
It is a safe procedure that can relieve pain, increase microcirculation and microperfusion by up to 400% (Nielsen, et al, 2007), and vent internal heat or thermoregulation that will assist with decreasing inflammation.
The discoloration can last for up to 2 - 4 days.
